Fishing on the River Calder in Lancashire

The River Calder Lancashire is a tributory of the Ribble and runs for approximately 15 Miles from The Burnley area running through a number of towns including Whalley, Altham, Padiham, Burnley & Holme Chapel. The River Calder fishing is controlled by a number of clubs a fe wot which we have listed below, these are generally Members only fishing stretchs so please join one of the clubs or check before fishing.

Abbey Stretch

The Abbey Stretch runs from the town road bridge Whalley downstream to the Abbey Orchard.

Access: Via the Abbey main gate around the quadrangle through the gateway in the far left corner.

Parking: is allowed on the quadrangle, and in the two designated areas alongside the river. Padlocked gates also lead to the river bank

 

Billington Stretch

The Billington Stretch is the opposite bank to the Abbey Stretch with fishing allowed down to the Viaduct upstream to the boundary edges of the houses, but not in front of the houses

Access: is made by going just past the old Judge Walmsley, right down Longworth Road to the Viaduct, then walk down the farm track underneath the viaduct, walking upstream along the edge of the meadow.

Fish include Grayling, Barbel, Roach, Dace, Chub, Carp, Bream &  Trout.

River Calder Barnes Farm

This Stretch includes both banks, starting at Altham Road Bridge. Care must be taken as power cables cross the river. Shallow water providing excellent fly fishing for Brown Trout and Grayling. The lower part of the stretch slows and deepens and can be good for Chub.

Cornfield Stretch

The stretch extends from Hagg wood down to Gawthorpe hall. Consisting of many pools separated by riffles – an excellent stretch for fly fishing with brown trout and also a few chub.

River Calder Padiham Stretch

The stretch starts at Station Road bridge in Padiham and extends approximately ¾ mile downstream left hand bank to the large weir at the former Padiham power station known locally as fat pipe. Trout, Roach, Dace & Chub.

 

 

 

The River Calder is a beautiful part of the world and an area we plan to fish over the next few years
